    PIR PANJAL PANORAMA

This is part of our Tough Kids Expeditions Program, which means, camping and trekking expedition style! The trek starts from Manali and you will learn so much about the outdoors on this program! How to light a fire, various kinds of knots, and the secret cure for poison ivy maybe?

Outward Bound India Himalaya (OBIH) does not believe in fixed camp sites for this age group. Our trips are usually expedition style, where young people move from campsite to campsite setting up their own tents and enjoying new vistas everyday. There's a lot more learning here and infinitely more exciting!

COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS

At Outward Bound, safety and hygiene have always been on the top of our “must-have” list. And now we are closely watching the new research as it comes out on a daily basis and have deep dived into our SOPS. We’ve made a new list and  we're checking it more than twice. We will continue to review the latest information from health experts and government authorities, and will be passing along the most up-to-date and relevant information to you so you can plan accordingly.

Our Covid-19 Safe SOPs are based on the simple principle of ASSIST.
Hygiene plays a very important factor on our trips, and at our campsites the ratio for loo tents vs participants is usually 1:4. You will always find a bucket of "pink paani" outside the dining areas that we set up - water mixed with potassium permanganate that acts as a disinfectant and children are urged to clean their hands well before eating.

All the food is freshly cooked with produce available locally. Lunch is always vegetarian and there's one non-veg dish for dinner every evening, along with hot soup, salad, rice, dal and two vegetarian dishes.
Dilshad with Puppy on Kuari Pass trek
Our Tough Kids Expeditions Program isn't for the weak-hearted. Planned to ensure that the route is safe  yet challenging, young people will be taught to pitch their own tents, will help the kitchen staff in chopping and dicing, and wash and clean up after every meal. By the end of the day, it's one exhausted child that slips under the covers of their sleeping bag, only to wake up early next morning to pack up camp and move to the next one.

OBIH takes a maximum of 15 persons for these camping and trekking programs and the Instructor to Participant ratio is usually 1:3. Safety is our highest priority and this ratio also ensures that all participants get individual attention.

A Quick Look at Your Plan for the Next 6 Days

DAY 1: ARRIVE AT MANALI
Arrive at Manali. Your best option would be to fly into Bagdogra (Kullu) from where our OBI-H team will pick you up. Another option is to take the overnight Volvo from Delhi to Manali. Very comfortable and you're in Manali when you wake up!  If your schedule allows you to arrive a day earlier, that helps better with your acclimatization. You can also choose to fly in to Chandigarh and drive up to Manali (a 6 - 7 hour drive). Either ways, let us know how you plan to get there and we'll ensure your stay at Manali.

Overnight at hotel on twin sharing basis.
DAY 2:  DRIVE MANALI - SHURU VILLAGE | TREK FROM SHURU TO BANARA VILLAGE AND ON TO TILGAN | 5 - 6 HRS | 2600 M
It's just a 5 KM drive and we'll leave immediately after breakfast. The drive up to Shuru village will take around 30 minutes. From Shuru village we start our trek which will take us around 5 – 6 hours at a gentle pace.  The trek takes us along the banks of the Beas river that leads to a gentle climb to Banara village in the Kullu valley. We walk through thick forests and drop in to see the Arjun Cave on the way.

The cave itself is an unremarkable feature amidst the serenity  of the jungle - if you didn't know the mythology behind it. The locals believe that it is here that Arjuna came to meditate before the Mahabharat and earned the Pashupatastra. Considered to be the most powerful of all weapons which can be discharged with a bow, a word or even one's own mind or eyes, it was never to be used against lesser enemies or by lesser warriors. The Pashupatastra was capable of destroying creation and vanquishing all beings and one had to earn it from Lord Shiva himself. It is said, that Arjun meditated in this very  cave and gained Shiva's blessings.

Tonight we halt at Tilgan for the night, our campsite at 2600m (8,528 ft.) amidst pine forest and grass meadows.

Enjoy the evening with bonfire. Overnight in expedition tents.
DAY 3: TREK TILGAN - JOGIDUG  - SORUTO | 5 - 6 HRS | 3000M
We'll gain around 400 metres today - just about the right altitude gain to help you acclimatize. After our morning breakfast, we trek on the path to Soruto via Jogidug – a 5 to 6 hour trek. The route takes us above tree line and it’s here that the views start opening up and right there is the magnificent Pir Panjal range! Once we arrive into camp we can relax and enjoy the panoramic views around. Enjoy the evening with bonfire.

Overnight in expedition tents at an altitude of 3000m (9840 ft.)
DAY 4: TREK SORUTU - RODAKHODI | 5 - 6 HRS | 3300 M
Early morning wake up call, morning energizers and breakfast. And then its time to pack up your campsite and move on to the next. Today we begin to climb to Hamta where we have incredible views of the Pir Panjal range and Brigu Lake surrounded by mountains. Below us lies Sethan village and we continue a gentle climb up to the campsite at Roda Khodi.

Enjoy the evening with bonfire. Overnight in expedition tents, altitude 3300m (10824 ft.)
DAY 5:  TREK RODAKHODI - PANDUROPA - PRINI AND DRIVE TO MANALI | TREK 3 HRS AND 1 HOUR DRIVE
As always – an early morning wake up call, followed by energizers and breakfast. After breakfast we trek down further to Prini village. This is where our vehicles pick us up and drive us back to our hotel. Shower and change and then there will be free time in the afternoon to loll around and swap pictures and stories of our amazing experience or walk down the famous Manali Mall road and be a simple tourist!

Overnight stay at hotel.

WHY "OUTWARD BOUND"?

In nautical terms, when a ship leaves the safety of its harbour for the challenges of the open seas, she is said to be "Outward Bound".

Similarly, when young people leave the comfort of their homes and workplaces to venture into unfamiliar territory, or when they change their usual way of thinking and adapt to new ideas, they are said to be Outward Bound. The programs offered equip its participants to grow through challenges helps them to head out bravely into unknown waters.
“A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. - William Shedd
